What are the classifications of Stellite alloys?

May 08, 2025

1. Classification by application
- Wear-resistant alloys: Mainly used to resist various wear conditions, such as parts in mining machinery, construction machinery, agricultural machinery and other fields. Common grades include Stellite 1, Stellite 12, Stellite 190, etc.
- High temperature resistant alloys: Can maintain good mechanical properties and stability in high temperature environments, commonly used in aerospace, gas turbines, metallurgy and other industries. For example, blades and combustion chambers of aircraft engines, blades and nozzles of gas turbines. Typical grades include Stellite 4, Stellite 25, Stellite 156, etc.
- Corrosion-resistant alloys: With excellent corrosion resistance, it can resist the erosion of chemical media such as acids, alkalis, and salts, and is widely used in chemical industry, marine engineering, pharmaceuticals, food processing and other fields. For example, reactors, pipelines, valves in chemical equipment, ship propellers in marine environments, seawater desalination equipment, etc. Common grades include Stellite 21, Stellite 31, Stellite 712, etc.
2. Classification by chemical composition
-High carbon alloy: The carbon content is relatively high, generally above 1%, and can form a large amount of carbides. It has extremely high hardness and wear resistance, but relatively low toughness. It is suitable for occasions with extremely high requirements for wear resistance, such as cutting tools, ore crushing equipment, etc.
-Low carbon alloy: The carbon content is relatively low, usually below 0.5%, or even as low as about 0.2%. It has good high temperature performance, good oxidation resistance and creep resistance, and is mainly used for parts in high temperature environments, such as gas turbine blades, high temperature furnace parts, etc.
-High chromium alloy: The chromium content is relatively high. Chromium can form a dense oxide film on the surface of the alloy, improving the corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance of the alloy. Therefore, high chromium Stellite alloy performs well in corrosion resistance and high temperature oxidation resistance, and is often used in corrosion-resistant parts in the fields of chemical industry, ocean, energy, etc.
-Tungsten-containing alloy: The addition of tungsten can significantly improve the hardness and high temperature strength of the alloy, so that the alloy has good wear resistance and thermal fatigue resistance. It is often used to manufacture high temperature wear-resistant parts, such as aircraft engine blades, hot extrusion dies, etc.
3. Classification by production process
-Casting alloy: It is made into various shapes of parts through the casting process. It has good formability and can produce parts of complex shapes, which is suitable for mass production. Common grades include Stellite 1, Stellite 6, Stellite 12, etc.
-Forged alloy: After the forging process, the alloy structure is more compact, the grains are refined, and the mechanical properties are significantly improved, especially the strength and toughness. It is often used to manufacture parts that bear high loads and high stresses, such as turbine disks and blades of aircraft engines.
-Powder metallurgy alloy: Stellite alloy powder is made into parts through pressing, sintering and other processes, which can accurately control the composition and structure of the alloy and obtain high-performance alloy materials. It is widely used in aerospace, electronics, medical equipment and other fields.
