Rolling mills and classification of rolling processes

May 14, 2025

Rolling is one of the core processes in the field of metal processing. It mainly applies pressure to metal billets (such as steel, aluminum, copper, etc.) through rolling mills to make them plastically deform, thereby obtaining products such as plates, pipes, profiles, wires, etc. with specific shapes, sizes and properties.
1. Typical rolling mill types
Two-roll mill: simple structure, used for billet opening or rough rolling;
Four-roll mill: fine working rolls (reduce rolling force) and coarse support rolls (increase rigidity), widely used for plate and strip rolling;
Multi-roll mill: extremely high rigidity, used for extremely thin strips (such as foil, thickness ≤0.05mm) or high hardness materials (such as stainless steel, titanium alloy);
Continuous rolling mill: multiple rolling mills are connected in series to achieve continuous rolling and high production efficiency.
2. Classification
-Classification by rolling temperature

  • Hot rolling (Hot Rolling)

Process characteristics: the billet is heated to above the recrystallization temperature, with good plasticity and low deformation resistance, suitable for large deformation processing.
Application scenarios: production of medium and thick plates, hot-rolled coils, steel sections, seamless pipe billets, etc., often used for billet opening and preliminary forming.
Advantages: low energy consumption, high efficiency, can eliminate casting defects; Disadvantages: surface oxidation, low dimensional accuracy.

  • Cold Rolling

Process characteristics: rolling at room temperature (or slightly heated), deformation below the recrystallization temperature, intermediate annealing is required to eliminate work hardening.
Application scenarios: production of thin plates, strip steel (such as automotive panels, steel for home appliances), high-precision pipes/wires, with high surface quality and dimensional accuracy requirements.
Advantages: smooth surface, high dimensional accuracy (thickness tolerance can reach ±0.01mm), uniform organization. Disadvantages: high deformation resistance, high energy consumption, and subsequent annealing is required.
- Classification by product form

  • Plate rolling: production of medium and thick plates, thin plates.
  • Tube rolling: seamless pipe (perforation + extension), welded pipe (welding after plate forming);
  • Wire/bar rolling: wire for welding, bar for mechanical parts.
