The role of rhenium in Tungsten Rhenium Alloy Rod

May 26, 2025

Rhenium makes tungsten-rhenium alloy a high-performance material with high temperature strength, processing adaptability and environmental tolerance through multi-dimensional performance regulation.
Low rhenium content (3%-5%): mainly improves processing plasticity and creep resistance, suitable for parts that require complex forming (such as filaments, precision electrodes).
Medium-high rhenium content (10%-25%): significantly improves high temperature strength and oxidation resistance, and is mostly used in extreme high temperature scenarios (such as aircraft engines, vacuum melting equipment).
1. Enhance high-temperature mechanical properties

  • Improve creep resistance

Pure tungsten is prone to creep (slow plastic deformation) at high temperatures (especially above 1500°C), and the addition of rhenium can hinder dislocation movement and inhibit grain boundary sliding through the **solid solution strengthening** mechanism, so that the alloy can still maintain a high strength above 2000°C.

  • Improve high-temperature ductility

Pure tungsten is brittle at high temperatures, and rhenium can reduce the tough-brittle transition temperature of tungsten, so that the alloy maintains a certain plasticity at high temperatures and avoids failure due to brittle fracture.
2. Optimize processing performance and reduce processing difficulty
Pure tungsten has high hardness and poor plasticity, and is prone to cracking during cold processing. The addition of rhenium can significantly improve the room temperature ductility of the alloy. For example, a tungsten-rhenium alloy containing 5% Re can be made into a foil with a thickness of less than 0.1mm by cold rolling. Rhenium can also refine the grain structure of tungsten, reduce crack initiation during processing, and make the alloy easier to form through processes such as forging, rolling, and stretching.
3. Improve chemical stability

  • Enhance oxidation resistance

In an aerobic environment at medium and high temperatures (such as 800-1500℃), rhenium can form a stable oxide film on the surface of the alloy, which can slow down the oxidation rate of the internal tungsten and extend the service life of the alloy in an oxidizing atmosphere.

  • Corrosion resistance and anti-volatilization

Rhenium has better resistance to molten metals and corrosive gases than tungsten, which can reduce the corrosion loss of the alloy in chemical, metallurgical, and other scenarios. In a vacuum or inert atmosphere, the low vapor pressure characteristics of rhenium cooperate with tungsten, making it suitable for long-term vacuum environment applications.
