Overview
High-density tungsten alloys can generally be divided into tungsten nickel iron and tungsten nickel copper. W-Ni-Fe is the most widely used type of tungsten alloy, used for counterweights (such as automobiles, aerospace), radiation shielding parts (medical, nuclear industry), armor-piercing cores, precision instrument parts, etc. W-Ni-Cu is suitable for scenes with non-magnetic requirements, such as magnetron parts, electronic packaging, non-magnetic counterweights in precision instruments, etc.
Tungsten Alloy Rod is an alloy material formed by adding metal elements such as nickel, iron, and copper to tungsten as a matrix. With its high density, high melting point, good mechanical properties (high strength and good toughness), excellent corrosion resistance, and oxidation resistance, it can be widely used as high-temperature resistant parts, balance weights, electrodes, mold materials, golf clubs, etc.
Characteristics
The extremely high density, usually between 16.5-18.75 g/cm³, is much higher than common metals such as lead and steel. It has a greater weight under the same volume, meeting the needs of counterweight and balance.
High dimensional stability and a low thermal expansion coefficient, small dimensional deformation when the temperature changes, and can maintain high precision for a long time after processing, which is suitable for scenes with strict dimensional tolerance requirements.
Excellent corrosion resistance, good resistance to corrosive media such as acid, alkali, salt, etc., at room temperature, superior to many metal materials (such as steel is prone to rust), suitable for use in harsh environments.
Outstanding high temperature resistance, with a melting point as high as 3422℃. It can maintain high strength and stability above 1000℃, which is much higher than the heat resistance limit of materials such as steel and aluminum alloy.
Excellent mechanical properties, high tensile strength, good plasticity, can withstand large impact force and load, not easy to deform or break, can be processed by cutting, grinding, forging, etc.

Application
- Aerospace: Mainly used for gyroscope balance weights in inertial navigation systems of aircraft and satellites, high-temperature and high-pressure components such as rocket engine nozzles and combustion chamber linings, structural counterweights, or shock-absorbing components.
- Defense: Used for armor-piercing projectile cores, and can also be used for counterweights of torpedoes and submarines to adjust buoyancy and center of gravity.
- Welding: Tungsten Alloy Rod (especially those containing rare earth elements such as cerium and thorium) is resistant to high temperatures and has stable arcs. It is the core electrode material for TIG welding and is widely used in precision welding of stainless steel, aluminum alloys, etc.
- High-temperature furnace industry: As a heating body, support rod, or furnace structure of a high-temperature furnace, it is suitable for scenes such as ceramic sintering and metal smelting.
- Metal processing: Used as a core material for manufacturing die-casting molds and wear-resistant tools (such as drill bits and cutters), suitable for processing high-strength alloys.
- Precision instruments: Used as a counterweight in balances, instruments, and clocks to ensure measurement accuracy.
Process
① Use high-purity tungsten powder and binder powders such as nickel, iron, and copper to ensure uniform mixing (the ratio is generally W:Ni:Fe=90:7:3 or 93:4.5:2.5, etc.).
② Load the mixed powder into an elastic mold and press it into shape to obtain a rod-shaped blank with high density, which is suitable for large-sized or complex-shaped bars.
③ High-temperature sintering, the binder melts and wets the tungsten particles to form a dense alloy.
④ Turning, grinding, and wire cutting, cut into fixed lengths according to needs, and the cuts must be flat.
⑤ Through multi-directional forging, the material undergoes plastic deformation, refines the grains, and improves the bending strength.
⑥ Low-temperature annealing of the bars after rotary forging to eliminate processing stress, stabilize the size, and avoid subsequent processing deformation.
⑦ Chemical polishing and electroplating to improve surface finish and extend service life.
⑧ Comprehensive testing and quality control, such as dimensional accuracy, performance testing, and non-destructive testing.
