Classification and advantages of casting processing

Apr 10, 2025

1. Classification
- Gravity casting
Principle: Use gravity to pour liquid metal into the mold, and wait for it to solidify to form a casting.
Features: Simple equipment, low cost, suitable for small and medium batch production, especially for castings with complex shapes and large sizes.
Application: Widely used in automobiles, machinery, and other fields.
- Die casting
Principle: Use high pressure to quickly inject liquid metal into the mold, and solidify it under high pressure to form a casting.
Features: High production efficiency, high dimensional accuracy, high material utilization rate, but high mold cost and high equipment requirements.
Application: Widely used in automobiles, home appliances and consumer electronics.
- Investment casting
Principle: Use wax molds or plastic molds as prototypes, and form a shell by coating refractory materials multiple times. After melting, pour liquid metal to form a casting.
Features: Suitable for the production of high-precision, complex-shaped castings with high dimensional accuracy and low surface roughness.
Application: Mainly used in high-precision fields such as aerospace and medical devices.
-Sand casting
Principle: Castings are produced in sand molds, suitable for a variety of materials, especially steel, iron and most non-ferrous alloys.
Features: Low cost and wide adaptability, but low efficiency in the production of some complex shapes.
Application: Widely used in castings such as automobile engine cylinder blocks, cylinder heads and crankshafts.
2. Advantages

  • Parts with complex shapes can be manufactured: Parts with complex shapes that are difficult to manufacture by other processing methods can be produced, such as parts with structures such as cavities, holes, bosses, etc., which can reduce subsequent processing procedures and material consumption.
  • Adaptability: Almost all kinds of parts can be produced, including cast steel, aluminum alloys, copper alloys, etc., and are suitable for the manufacture of parts of different sizes and weights, from small precision parts to large heavy machinery parts.
  • High material utilization: Liquid metal can be directly poured into the desired shape, reducing the amount of material removal during cutting.
  • Good overall forming ability: Multiple parts can be combined into a whole for casting, reducing the connection and assembly process between parts, improving the integrity and reliability of parts, and also reducing assembly errors.
