1. Zirconium metal bars are utilized in the chemical and petrochemical industries for reactor linings, heat exchange tubes, valve cores, and agitator shafts that deal with highly corrosive media. Because zirconium provides a solution for both the problems of stainless steel having only a moderate level of temperature performance and being easily corroded, it extends the operational life of equipment made with zirconium.

2. In the nuclear power industry, zirconium rods are the base materials from which the cladding tubes for nuclear fuel, guide tubes for control rods, and structural components for the core of the reactor are manufactured. The low neutron absorption characteristics of zirconium allow for improved fuel utilization. Additionally, the resistance of zirconium to corrosion caused by high-temperature and high-pressure water contributes to the safety of the reactor. Thus, zirconium is a primary material in pressurized water reactors (PWR) and other types of reactors.

3. Zirconium bars are used in the aerospace industry to manufacture engine components, spacecraft support structures, and thermal protection systems that must withstand elevated temperatures and resist atomic oxygen damage and space radiation. The high temperature strength and low density of zirconium improve the thrust-to-weight ratio of an aerospace component.

4. Zirconium round bars have a surface roughness of less than 0.4μm after hot isostatic pressing and precision polishing, making it suitable for orthopedic and dental implants as well as being corrosion-resistant surgical instruments, such as forceps and bone plates, used in medical and bioengineering applications.

5. Other applications include but are not limited to pressure hulls for equipment used in deep-sea exploration, where resistance to seawater Cl⁻ corrosion is important, and excellent performance in marine environments is desired; as a high-temperature, corrosion-resistant material used to manufacture molds and fixtures in the processing of non-ferrous metals; and as structural components in nuclear medicine protective equipment and radioactive waste treatment devices, where there is a balance between corrosion resistance and nuclear.

Process

(1) Vacuum arc melting (VAR) or electron beam melting (EBM) technology is used to melt high-purity zirconium raw materials in a high vacuum environment.

(2) The molten metal solidifies layer by layer in a water-cooled copper crucible to form ingots, which reduces inclusions and elemental segregation by controlling the solidification rate.

(3) After the zirconium ingots are heated, the ingot is processed into the primary blank of the bar by hot extrusion or hot rolling.

(4) Cold rolling or cold drawing at room temperature, with ≤ 30% deformation per pass to improve the strength and surface quality of the bar.

(5) Carry out turning, grinding, and other processes to carve the bar to the final dimensional accuracy, and the surface roughness meets the standard.

(6) Quality testing and acceptance, such as chemical composition analysis, non-destructive testing, mechanical property testing, size and appearance inspection, etc.
