Cemented Carbide Dies

Cemented Carbide Dies

Wire drawing die is the main tool to achieve wire drawing, which is directly related to the surface quality and mechanical properties of the wire, so it is necessary to take into account the strength of the die, wear resistance, hardness, toughness, smooth working surface, low processing price of various coatings, and other factors. Cemented Carbide Dies are mainly made of high-quality tungsten carbide powder, suitable for drawing steel, non-ferrous metals, and pipes, and also suitable for manufacturing mechanical parts, wear and wear parts. Cemented Carbide Dies can also be used to draw wires inside high-precision instruments such as radar, aerospace equipment, instrumentation, electronics, and scientific instruments. Overview

Cemented carbide dies are a key tool commonly used in metal wire processing. Their core function is to apply pressure to the metal blank (such as steel, copper, or aluminum wire) through the specific shape of the die's inner hole, causing it to plastically deform. The size and shape accuracy of the die's inner hole directly determine the tolerance range of the finished wire, ensuring a uniform wire diameter and regular cross-section that meets the standardized requirements of industrial production. FANMETAL is a non-ferrous metal supplier with over 20 years of professional experience. We can also provide customers with other cemented carbide products such as Carbide Rod, Carbide Ball, Tungsten Carbide Bush, etc. We also accept customized design and production, so you can rest assured to placing your order.

Characteristics

Extremely high hardness

Tungsten carbide (WC) and cobalt (Co) have a hardness of up to HRA85-92 (equivalent to Rockwell hardness above HRC70), which is much higher than traditional materials such as tool steel. They can effectively resist wear and significantly extend the service life of the mold.

High-dimensional accuracy

The material has good stability and small dimensional error during processing, which can ensure that the diameter tolerance of the drawn wire is controlled within a strict range (usually up to ±0.001 - ±0.01mm), meeting the manufacturing needs of high-precision parts.

Good chemical stability

Compared with ordinary steel, cemented carbide has a certain resistance to corrosive media such as acid and alkali, and is suitable for wire drawing operations in corrosive environments.

High processing flexibility

Cemented carbide can be precisely processed through methods such as electrospark machining, welding, grinding, and laser processing, and can be made into parts of various complex shapes and sizes to meet the needs of different application scenarios.

Application

Cemented Carbide Dies are widely used in many industries that require drawing metal wires due to their advantages, such as high hardness, strong wear resistance, and stable precision.

1. Metal Products Industry

  • Steel wire products: include ordinary low-carbon steel wire (used for bundling and braiding), high-carbon steel wire (used for springs and wire rope), and alloy steel wire (such as bearing steel and tool steel wire).
  • Non-ferrous metal wire: Copper and copper alloy wire (such as red copper wire and brass wire) are widely used in wire and cable, electronic component leads, and pre-drawn copper tube blanks. Aluminum and aluminum alloy wire are used in aluminum stranded wire (power transmission), aluminum wire braiding, and packaging. Other non-ferrous metals (such as zinc wire, nickel wire, and titanium wire) are used in anti-corrosion coatings and precision aerospace parts.

2. Wire and Cable Industry
Used to draw copper and aluminum rods into conductive wire cores of varying diameters (ranging from a few millimeters to micrometers), ensuring the wire's roundness and surface finish, thus preventing interference with signal transmission.

3. Aerospace and Military Industries

Can be used to draw heat-resistant alloy wire (such as nickel-based alloy wire) for aircraft engines, high-strength steel wire for military applications (such as artillery fuses and body armor materials), and more.

4. Electronics and Precision Manufacturing Industries

  • Electronic components: such as resistor wire (tungsten wire, molybdenum wire) and copper wire for inductor coils. Diameters are often as small as micrometers, and molds must maintain tolerances within ±0.001mm.
  • Precision Instruments: Micro-wires used in medical devices (such as surgical sutures and endoscopic guidewires), and sensor wires used in instruments.

5. Construction and Building Materials Industry
Used for processing various structural metal wires, such as steel wire for building protection nets and aluminum alloy wire for fencing.

6. Automobile and Machinery Manufacturing Industry
Automotive parts: Such as high-carbon steel wire for valve springs and stainless steel wire for brake cables, require low replacement frequency and have a long service life.

Mechanical transmission parts: Such as chain pins and wire stock, before gear processing. Diameter accuracy is controlled through dies to ensure fit during subsequent assembly.

7. Other Specialty Industries

  • Precious metal processing: Such as gold wire (for chip bonding) and silver wire (for precision contacts). This reduces precious metal wire loss and reduces costs.
  • Welding rods and wires: Welding wire (such as stainless steel wire and aluminum wire) requires wire drawing dies to control diameter and straightness to ensure consistent weld quality.

Process

① Select high-quality carbide materials, choosing alloys with varying cobalt content and particle size based on the wire material and diameter.

② Process the blank into a body that approximates the mold shape using wire cutting or electrospark forming.

③ For larger diameter molds, first drill the center hole with a carbide drill. For small or ultra-fine diameter molds, use electrospark drilling, where electrode discharge erodes the material to create the initial hole.

④ Polish the inner wall of the mold hole on a dedicated polishing machine to remove grinding marks and reduce friction and wire wear during wire drawing.

⑤ Perform comprehensive quality inspections, including dimensional and surface quality checks, before packaging with foam board and sturdy wooden boxes.
