Tungsten Molds

Tungsten molds are made from tungsten carbide powder as the primary raw material, supplemented with metal binders such as cobalt and nickel, through a process of mixing, pressing, and sintering. Their core characteristics are exceptional hardness, excellent wear resistance, and excellent resistance to high temperatures and corrosion. They can withstand the high loads, high friction, and complex working conditions encountered during the forming of metal and non-metallic materials. They are widely used in wire and tube drawing, powder metallurgy pressing, cemented carbide product forming, and non-ferrous metal die-casting. With over 20 years of production experience, our company can meet a wide range of custom requirements. If you have any questions about this product's details or delivery time, don't hesitate to get in touch with us at admin@fanmetalloy.com. We look forward to your message.

Product Details ofTungsten Molds

Overview

Tungsten Molds are high-performance cemented carbide molds manufactured through powder metallurgy using tungsten carbide (WC) and cobalt (Co) as metallic binders. Renowned for its exceptional hardness, outstanding wear resistance, and formidable compressive strength, it significantly outperforms traditional steel molds. Consequently, it finds extensive application in high-volume, precision manufacturing sectors such as metal stamping, cold heading of fasteners, powder metallurgy forming, and wire drawing. Despite its higher initial cost, its superior durability makes it a critical tool for enhancing efficiency and reducing costs in large-scale production. Our company can provide customers with various types of tungsten and tungsten alloy products, such as tungsten rods, tungsten carbide blades, tungsten alloy weights, etc.

Carbide Characteristics

Extreme wear resistance

Its Vickers hardness (HV) can reach 1500-2000, which is much higher than that of traditional mold steel. It can effectively resist abrasive wear and adhesive wear (preventing the workpiece metal from adhering to the mold surface).

Excellent high temperature resistance

The thermal expansion coefficient of tungsten carbide is only 1/2-1/3 of that of mold steel. During high-temperature molding, the thermal deformation caused by temperature changes is extremely small, which can ensure the dimensional accuracy of the product at high temperatures.

Excellent corrosion resistance

Carbide itself exhibits strong chemical inertness and is resistant to reactions with acidic, alkaline, or saline solutions. When alloyed with nickel (Ni) or chromium (Cr), its corrosion resistance is further enhanced, making it suitable for metal forming dies in marine engineering and chemical processing applications.

High surface finish

Tungsten exhibits high density, and after precision grinding, its surface roughness can reach Ra 0.02–0.05 μm (mirror-like finish). When used in drawing or die-casting molds, it can directly achieve high surface finish on workpieces, reducing subsequent polishing and grinding processes and lowering production costs.

Application

1. Carbide molds are used for cold metal forming processes such as stamping, drawing, cold extrusion, and precision blanking at ambient temperatures. They are particularly suitable for high-volume, high-precision component production, including electronic chip lead frames, automotive high-strength steel stampings, and refrigeration system tubing.

2. Tungsten Molds are used for manufacturing die-casting and hot forging dies. They are compatible with aluminum alloy, zinc alloy, magnesium alloy, and copper alloy profiles (e.g., motor winding copper bars), titanium alloy/high-temperature alloy components (aerospace applications), and stainless steel pipe fittings. These molds can operate in high-temperature environments ranging from 300 to 1200°C.

3. Used for manufacturing powder metallurgy dies and cemented carbide cold heading dies to produce cemented carbide tool blanks, nozzles, and other complex components. Ensures uniform surface finish and density of compacts, as well as extended service life of finished products.

4. Employed as forming dies for precision punching of hardened steel parts (HRC 50+), diamond composite inserts, and other super-hard materials.

Process

① Mix tungsten carbide powder and cobalt powder in a ball mill to ensure uniform particle size and high purity.

② Inject the blended powder into moulds, then shape it through heating or pressing.

③ Heat the formed green compacts in a hydrogen atmosphere to 1400–1700°C, creating a dense internal structure.

④ Precision machining such as turning or drilling is performed on CNC machine tools according to customer-specified dimensions.

⑤ Surface coating, grinding, or polishing treatments are applied to enhance wear resistance and corrosion resistance.

⑥ Comprehensive quality inspection, including dimensional accuracy checks, visual inspection, and mechanical property testing.
