Solution heat treatment is an important means in the heat treatment process of metal materials, mainly used to improve the microstructure and performance of alloys. Its core principle is to dissolve the second phase (such as carbides, intermetallic compounds, etc.) in the alloy into the matrix through high-temperature heating to form a uniform solid solution, and then retain this state through rapid cooling, laying the foundation for subsequent performance regulation (such as aging strengthening).
1. Dissolve coarse carbides and ensure uniform chemical composition
Eliminate casting defects
Stellite alloys are usually prepared by the casting process, and there are coarse network carbides (such as WC, etc.) and alloy element segregation in the cast structure. Solution treatment (heating to a high temperature, such as 1100~1200℃, keeping warm and then cooling rapidly) can dissolve these coarse carbides in the cobalt-based austenite matrix, making the chemical composition uniform and eliminating the brittle phase at the grain boundary.
Improve the uniformity of the structure
The uniform structure can improve the comprehensive mechanical properties of the material (such as toughness and fatigue resistance) and avoid local corrosion or wear failure caused by uneven composition.
2. Improve plasticity and toughness for subsequent processing
Reduce hardness and improve processability
The hardness of cast Stellite 6B is relatively high (usually HRC 30~40), and direct processing (such as forging, rolling, cutting) is difficult. After solution treatment, the formation of supersaturated solid solution reduces the hardness of the material and improves the plasticity, which facilitates the further processing of the bar into complex shapes (such as forging into valve parts, cutting into wear-resistant parts, etc.).
Refine the grains
A reasonable solution treatment (such as controlling the heating temperature and cooling rate) can refine the grains, reduce the coarse grain defects in the cast state, and further improve the plasticity and impact resistance of the material.
3. Prepare for subsequent aging strengthening
Aging precipitation strengthening phase
In some application scenarios, aging treatment (such as medium temperature insulation) will be carried out after solution treatment. At this time, fine and dispersed carbides or intermetallic compounds will precipitate in the supersaturated solid solution, and the hardness and wear resistance of the material will be significantly improved through the "precipitation strengthening" mechanism.
Balanced performance
Solution treatment is a pretreatment step for aging strengthening. By adjusting the degree of solid solution and aging parameters, the size and distribution of the strengthening phase can be accurately controlled to achieve the best balance of strength, toughness, and wear resistance.
4. Improve corrosion resistance
Carbides at the grain boundaries in the cast state are prone to "intergranular corrosion". After solution treatment, carbides are dissolved, and alloying elements (such as Cr and W) are evenly distributed in the matrix, forming a continuous passivation film, reducing the tendency of intergranular corrosion and improving stability in a corrosive environment.
