Processing of Tungsten and Tungsten Molybdenum Alloys

Due to its high melting point and high hardness, tungsten itself has poor ductility and is difficult to process at room temperature. In order to reduce the strength and increase the ductility, we must heat the temperature to a suitable sintering temperature ( 340~370°C) where the transition from brittleness to ductility can be achieved.At the same time, we can choose the best carbide cutting inserts, improve the processing speed, and efficiently press and sinter the workpiece into the required shape. Moreover, we often use high hardness silicon carbide, aluminum oxide and grinding wheels to perform mechanical processing such as grinding, rolling and cutting of the relatively dense tungsten material.


The difficulty of processing tungsten molybdenum materials is not only high hardness, but also its own hard oxide protective layer. This oxide film will quickly wear and destroy the tool, which will reduce the processing efficiency and quality.Moreover, we must complete a series of processing processes such as stamping, forging, spinning and cutting within two critical temperatures, the ductile-brittle transition temperature (200-500°C) and the recrystallization temperature (856-1200°C). In addition, adding copper, silver and iron to tungsten alloy or tungsten heavy alloy can improve the ductility of the alloy and make it possible to process it at room temperature.
