Zirconium 702 Plate
Overview
Zirconium 702 Plate is a high-performance, industrial-grade zirconium alloy plate. Its unparalleled resistance to strong acid and alkali corrosion, excellent machinability and weldability, and relatively high cost-performance (where corrosion resistance is required) make it a preferred material for critical equipment and components in highly corrosive environments, such as the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Compared to stainless steel, nickel-based alloys, and titanium alloys, it can meet long-term corrosion resistance requirements.
Characteristics
- The content of Zr+Hf in zirconium 702 is usually above 99.2%, and its high purity makes it have good chemical stability.
- Zirconium 705 has better corrosion resistance than zirconium 702 in an acidic environment, but zirconium 702 is better in long-term high-temperature water corrosion performance.
- The tensile strength of zirconium 702 is ≥380MPa, and the elongation is ≥20%, which has a good balance of strength and toughness. In comparison, zirconium 704 and zirconium 705 have higher tensile strength but relatively lower elongation.
Excellent corrosion resistance
Zirconium has extremely strong corrosion resistance to hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and other strong acids, which is far superior to stainless steel, titanium alloy, and other materials. It is easy to form a dense oxide film on the surface, which can effectively prevent the penetration of corrosive media.
Good mechanical properties
The room temperature tensile strength of zirconium 702 is about 345-550MPa, and the elongation can reach 16%-20%. It has both high strength and good plasticity, can withstand certain mechanical loads and impacts, and is suitable for processing into components with complex shapes.
Very low neutron absorption cross section
The thermal neutron absorption cross section of zirconium is very small (about 0.18 barns), which is much lower than stainless steel (2.9 barns) and titanium (5.6 barns). During use, it can reduce neutron loss and improve nuclear reaction efficiency.
Good processing performance
Not only can it be processed by cold rolling, hot rolling, stamping, or forging, but it can also achieve high-quality connections through conventional welding processes (such as TIG welding and plasma welding).

Application
Among the common zirconium alloy grades, zirconium 702 has a relatively low cost and is suitable for conventional corrosion resistance needs in non-nuclear fields. It has a high cost-effectiveness in some cost-sensitive occasions that require a certain degree of corrosion resistance.
- Chemical industry: Zirconium 702 Plate can be used to manufacture reactor linings, heat exchangers, valves, pump casings, blades, agitators, and other chemical equipment components to ensure the service life of the equipment and production safety.
- Aerospace industry: Zirconium 702 has excellent high-temperature resistance and lightweight characteristics. Its products can be used to manufacture key components such as combustion chambers and heat exchangers of aircraft and rocket engines, which helps to reduce the weight of aircraft and improve their performance and efficiency.
- Nuclear industry: Due to its extremely low neutron absorption cross-section and good radiation resistance, Zirconium Plates are one of the main materials for nuclear reactor pressure vessels and fuel element claddings. They can withstand high temperature, high pressure, and high radiation environments to ensure the safe operation of nuclear reactors.

- Seawater desalination field: It can be used to manufacture key components in seawater desalination equipment, such as evaporators, condensers, etc., to ensure that seawater desalination equipment can operate stably for a long time in a seawater environment.
Process
①Use high-purity 702 material and obtain zirconium ingots with a larger diameter through vacuum melting to provide billets for subsequent rolling.
②Press it into a slab with relatively uniform thickness (usually 50-100mm thick) through free forging or die forging.
③Perform multiple passes of rolling on the hot rolling mill to gradually reduce the thickness to 10-30mm.
④Reduce the thickness to the final requirement (from a few millimeters to a thin plate below 0.1mm) through multiple passes of cold rolling.
⑤Heat treatment to stabilize the organization and adjust the mechanical properties. Intermediate annealing is required after each rolling pass to restore plasticity.
⑥According to customer needs, it is cut into a fixed size by plasma cutting or laser cutting.
⑦Surface pickling, grinding, or polishing treatment to further improve surface finish and corrosion resistance.
⑧Strict quality inspection, such as mechanical property testing, non-destructive testing, dimensional accuracy inspection, etc.
