Cobalt Alloy 6B Bar
Overview
Cobalt Alloy 6B Bar is a cobalt-based chromium-tungsten wear-resistant alloy bar containing approximately 60% cobalt, 30% chromium, and 4.5% tungsten. Produced via casting or powder metallurgy, it exhibits exceptional high-temperature wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and creep resistance. It is commonly employed in the manufacture of wear-resistant components for extreme operating conditions, such as valves, pump shafts, and bearings. Alloy 6B represents a highly representative grade within cobalt-based high-temperature alloys. Commonly referenced international standards include ASTM B262 (for forgings) and ASTM B574 (for bars), ensuring consistent composition and performance stability.
Cobalt Alloy Characteristics
Excellent corrosion resistance
The chromium element in cobalt alloys forms a dense protective layer of chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) on the surface, exhibiting superior resistance to high-temperature oxidation and thermal corrosion compared to nickel-based alloys.
Outstanding high-temperature performance
It maintains stable microstructural integrity under prolonged exposure to high temperatures (above 600°C), retaining excellent mechanical strength and creep resistance that significantly outperforms many iron-based and nickel-based alloys.
Excellent wear resistance
It possesses exceptional hardness and resistance to abrasive wear and adhesive wear. Under high temperatures and pressures, it is less prone to metal-to-metal adhesion (seizing), making it suitable for manufacturing friction pair components such as valve seats, sealing rings, and bearings.
Excellent biocompatibility
Medical-grade cobalt alloys are non-toxic and non-allergenic to human tissue, exhibiting excellent biocompatibility. They demonstrate exceptional stability when subjected to long-term cyclic loading within the body's fluid environment, resisting corrosion and releasing no harmful ions.

Application
1. Aerospace Sector
Cobalt Alloy 6B bar is frequently employed in the manufacture of high-temperature bearings, aero-engine turbine blades, combustion chamber components, erosion-resistant seals for rocket engines, and fuel nozzles – all parts subjected to prolonged high stress and friction. This ensures structural reliability under extreme conditions. For instance, corrosion-resistant shrouds in steam turbines utilise Cobalt 6B to shield blades from high-temperature steam erosion.
2. Oil and Gas Extraction
It is employed in deep-sea drilling tools such as drill bits, valve stems, and sucker rod pumps, as well as valves and pipelines for offshore drilling platforms. Its service life can exceed that of conventional alloy valves by more than threefold.
3. Chemical Processing Industry
Cobalt 6B's resistance to strong acids like sulphuric and nitric acid, along with salt spray environments, makes it the material of choice for chemical reactor linings, piping, and pump plungers. For instance, in the chlor-alkali industry, centrifuge linings made from Cobalt 6B withstand prolonged corrosion from caustic soda solutions.
4. Moulds and Precision Manufacturing
Suitable for producing hot extrusion dies, die-casting cores, gear cutting tools, crusher rollers, and other machining tools, significantly reducing product defects caused by wear and enhancing production efficiency.
5. High-Temperature Furnace Industry
Primarily used for manufacturing furnace rolls and high-temperature fixtures in heat treatment furnaces, maintaining stable machining performance under prolonged high-temperature oxidation.
6. Food Processing Industry
Suitable for cutting blades, mixing shafts, centrifuge linings, and sterile piping in food processing machinery, ensuring safety throughout production processes.
7. Medical Industry
Employed in manufacturing implantable medical devices such as artificial joints, dental implants, and cardiac stents. Forms stable bonds with human tissue, minimising rejection reactions.

Cobalt Chrome Alloy Process
① Employing vacuum induction melting technology, the precise ratio of elements such as cobalt, chromium, tungsten, and nickel is controlled to produce high-purity ingots.
② The ingots are heated to high temperatures for hot forging, forming dense bar blanks.
③ Through multiple passes of hot extrusion or hot rolling, the material's grain structure and mechanical properties are further refined, progressively shaping it into bar stock approaching final dimensions.
④ The bar stock is heated to a specific high temperature, held at this temperature, then rapidly cooled. This ensures complete solid solution of alloying elements, yielding a uniform austenitic microstructure and optimising overall performance.
⑤ Cold drawing or cold rolling is performed as required to enhance dimensional accuracy and surface finish, followed by straightening, cutting, and surface treatment (e.g., pickling, polishing).
⑥ Upon completion, the finished product undergoes chemical composition analysis, mechanical property testing, non-destructive inspection (e.g., ultrasonic testing), and dimensional verification. Upon passing inspection, it is packaged for international express delivery.
