Chemical Composition

  • High nickel content is the most notable characteristic of Inconel Alloy 600, resulting in excellent corrosion resistance in reducing environments and alkaline solutions.
  • Medium chromium content provides good resistance to oxidation and carburization.
  • Low carbon content reduces sensitization (carbide precipitation leading to intergranular corrosion) after welding or during extended use in the 425-870°C temperature range.
  • Solid solution strengthening: The alloy achieves strength through solid solution strengthening (primarily from chromium and iron) rather than age hardening.
Element Content, wt% Main Function
Ni ≥ 72.0% (usually 72-80%) Matrix element provides excellent corrosion resistance, especially to alkaline environments, and stabilizes the austenitic structure.
Cr 14.0 - 17.0%

Provides high-temperature oxidation resistance and enhances corrosion resistance in various acidic and sulfidic environments.

Fe 6.0 - 10.0%

As an alloying element, it aids in cost control and synergizes with other elements to enhance strength and machinability.

C ≤ 0.15%

The content is relatively low to prevent carbide precipitation during welding or high-temperature use, thereby avoiding intergranular corrosion.

Mn ≤ 1.00%

Improve hot working properties and deoxidation effect.

Si ≤ 0.50%

As a deoxidizer, it enhances the purity of the smelting process.

Cu ≤ 0.50%

Occasionally present, with minimal impact on performance, but may affect corrosion resistance under specific conditions.

Al ≤ 0.30%

Trace amounts help enhance antioxidant properties.

Ti ≤ 0.30%

Similar to aluminum, it exists in trace amounts and helps form a stable oxide film.

S ≤ 0.015%

Strict control is implemented to prevent thermal brittleness, thereby enhancing the material's hot workability and weldability.

P ≤ 0.040%

Strict control to avoid adverse effects on corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

Unique Performance

1. High-Temperature Performance

Alloy 600 material not only maintains structural integrity during short-term high-temperature heating but also exhibits excellent creep resistance and stress relaxation resistance at temperatures ranging from 650 to 800°C. It is particularly suitable for manufacturing high-temperature components subjected to long-term loading.

2. Corrosion Resistance

Inconel 600's corrosion resistance stems from the synergistic interaction between its nickel matrix and chromium oxide film, demonstrating tolerance to diverse corrosive media. For instance, in environments like air, oxygen, nitric acid, and chromic acid, the surface oxide film remains dense and resistant to degradation. Furthermore, it exhibits extremely low corrosion rates in neutral or weakly corrosive media such as water (freshwater, seawater), steam, organic acids (e.g., acetic acid, citric acid), and salt solutions (e.g., sodium chloride).

3. Mechanical Properties

It exhibits excellent ductility, facilitating cold working processes like stamping and forging. It maintains sufficient strength at elevated temperatures, resists brittle fracture, and can withstand high-temperature loading requirements.

Typical Applications

1. Chemical and Petrochemical Industries

  • This is one of the most extensive application areas for Inconel 600, particularly suited for equipment handling corrosive media.
  • Used in manufacturing reactors, distillers, bubble columns, and condensers for processing chemical products.
  • Employed in pipelines, fittings, and pump valves for conveying corrosive liquids and gases.
  • Sodium sulfide production is utilized for evaporator tubes, tube sheets, and stripping trays.
  • Resists corrosion from chlorine and fluorine gases in the production of organic or inorganic chlorides and fluorides.

2. Aerospace Industry

  • Used in manufacturing gas turbine exhaust liners, turbine seals, combustion chamber liners, and sealing rings.
  • Used in aircraft engine nozzles and other components operating under high-temperature, high-pressure conditions.
  • Used in manufacturing engine and airframe components requiring high-temperature resistance.

3. Heat Treatment Industry

  • Used in manufacturing heating element sleeves for industrial furnaces and thermocouple protection tubes.
  • Used in manufacturing rotary kilns, muffle furnaces, drum heaters, heat treatment baskets, and trays.
  • Used in manufacturing furnace-mounted flasks, supports, lifting devices, etc., particularly in carburizing and nitriding atmospheres.

4. Electronics Industry

  • Used in manufacturing cathode ray tube (CRT) components such as thyratron grids, tube supports, and springs.

5. Food Processing Industry

  • Suitable for equipment handling corrosive foods or requiring high sanitary standards, such as pulp processing machinery dealing with corrosive substances like rosin acid.

6. Other Fields

  • Marine Engineering: Exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in seawater and brine environments, suitable for offshore platforms and ship components.
  • Pharmaceutical Industry: Used in manufacturing reaction equipment requiring high purity and corrosion resistance.

Processing Method

1. Hot Working

Suitable for forging billets, rolling into plates or tubes, such as aircraft engine blades, turbine discs, and large chemical forging components.

2. Cold Working

Suitable for cold rolling strips or wires, such as precision thin plates, elastic components, gauge springs, fasteners, etc.

Significant work hardening occurs during cold working, requiring step-by-step forming with intermediate annealing (1050–1100°C solution treatment) to relieve hardening.

3. Machining

Primarily employs coated carbide tools for turning and milling operations. Examples include transmission shafts and support shafts for high-temperature applications, sealing discs or flanges, small high-temperature vessels and bearing sleeves, flange covers and support plates for high-temperature equipment, and structural components featuring grooves, bosses, or keyways.

4. Welding

Most commonly uses TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding for thin plates or precision components. MIG welding is employed for efficient thick plate welding. Resistance welding (e.g., spot welding, seam welding) is suitable for thin plate lap joints.

5. Heat Treatment

Solution Treatment: Hold at 1040–1150°C followed by water quenching to relieve work hardening and restore ductility.

Stress Relief: Low-temperature annealing at 550–700°C to eliminate residual stresses from machining or welding.

Ageing Treatment (less common): Used to enhance high-temperature strength, though it may reduce corrosion resistance.

6. Surface Treatment and Finishing

Polishing/Electropolishing: Improves surface finish and reduces corrosion initiation points.

Pickling and Passivation: Removes hot-work scale to restore surface corrosion resistance.
