Application Advantages of Tungsten Copper Alloy

Nov 21, 2024

Tungsten copper alloy is a structure formed by a uniform mixture of tungsten and copper phase monomers. It is neither mutually soluble nor forms intermetallic compounds. It is a typical pseudo alloy. It combines the excellent properties of the two component metals, such as tungsten's high temperature resistance, high strength, high density and copper's high electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and high plasticity. At present, its main use is electrical contact, especially the contact parts in high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage switchgear. The excellent performance and adjustable characteristics of tungsten copper alloy make it have a very broad application prospect in electrical, electronic, nuclear energy and military fields.

Our company has more than ten years of professional experience in the production and sales of tungsten copper alloy. We can provide customers with WCu Refractory Metal Faced Electrode, Tungsten Copper Sleeve, Tungsten Copper Bar, Tungsten Copper Plate and other products. If you need, you can send an email to contact us.

The traditional preparation methods mainly include high-temperature liquid phase sintering, melt infiltration, hot pressing sintering and activated sintering. With the development and research of new technologies and processes, some new modern preparation methods have also emerged, such as spark plasma sintering, 3D printing, mechanical alloying, etc.

1. Advantages of tungsten copper alloy

Super high strength and hardness: Tungsten copper alloy has extremely high tensile strength and hardness, which is several times that of ordinary metals. This means that it can withstand greater pressure and is more wear-resistant.

Excellent electrical and thermal conductivity: Tungsten copper alloy has better electrical conductivity than pure copper, which can effectively reduce resistance and improve the operating efficiency of equipment. At the same time, its thermal conductivity is also very good, which can effectively dissipate heat and maintain stable operation of equipment.

Good high temperature performance: At extremely high temperatures, the thermal expansion coefficient of tungsten copper alloy is low and can maintain stable physical properties. This means that it can still maintain its original mechanical properties under high temperature environment.

Environmental protection and non-toxicity: Tungsten copper alloy is non-toxic and harmless during production and use, and is a green and environmentally friendly material.

According to different copper content, there can be the following grades

WCu10; WCu15; WCu20; WCu25; WCu30.

CuW50; CuW55; CuW60; CuW65; CuW70; CuW75; CuW80; CuW85; CuW90.

2. Application of tungsten copper alloy

1) Electrical contact material

Electrical contact material, also known as contact or contact point, is a key component of high and low voltage electrical appliances. It is responsible for connecting and disconnecting current, and directly affects the reliability and service life of switches and electrical appliances. The tungsten copper alloy contact has very little ablation in the arc, and even if the local temperature is too high, welding will not occur. This ensures the stability, reliability and long life of the switch performance. Moreover, the higher the tungsten content, the better the anti-burning performance.

2) Electrode material

Tungsten copper alloy can be used as electrode materials such as resistance welding electrodes, EDM electrodes, and plasma electrodes. In the process of EDM, the role of the electrode material is to transmit the machining pulse and erode the workpiece with its own minimal loss. Tungsten copper materials have the advantages of fast processing speed, high processing quality, and low electrode material loss. Therefore, they have obvious advantages in the fine processing of high-speed tools and dies and difficult-to-process materials.

3) High-temperature materials

When tungsten copper alloy materials are used at high temperatures (3100℃ or higher), the copper contained in its two-phase structure will vaporize and absorb a large amount of heat, thereby significantly reducing the surface temperature of tungsten copper devices and ensuring the application of tungsten copper materials at high temperatures. Therefore, an important use of tungsten copper materials is as high-temperature devices such as rockets and missiles that are ablated and flushed by high-temperature and high-speed airflows, such as gas rudders, nozzles, and throat liners.

4) Electronic packaging and heat sink materials

Since the thermal expansion coefficient of tungsten copper alloys is very close to that of silicon wafers, BeO, GaAs and other materials, the thermal conductivity coefficient is high, and the above two coefficients can be adjusted by adjusting the tungsten copper content, so tungsten copper heat sinks have become ideal packaging materials for electronic components in special fields. As substrates, connectors and heat dissipation components, they are widely used in computer central processing systems, large-scale integrated circuits and high-power microwave devices.

5) Other materials

It can be used as a reinforcing rib for heavy-load sliding friction sleeves; used as a solid seal for high-speed rotation and movement, a component in various instruments that requires special requirements such as non-magnetic, low expansion, high elastic modulus, radiation shielding, etc., and a device material that can withstand and transmit large heat flow that is being studied. In addition, tungsten-copper composite materials can also be found in lasers, communication equipment, and sports and sports devices (such as the weight of a golf ball).
