Overview

Tungsten Carbide Flat Bar is a high-performance industrial material made by sintering hard phase powders such as tungsten and cobalt with binders. It has ultra-high hardness, excellent wear resistance and compressive strength, and stable dimensional accuracy. It can be widely used in cutting tool manufacturing, die stamping, mining exploration, precision electronics, and other fields. It can significantly extend the service life of cutting tools and dies and is the preferred industrial solution to replace traditional high-speed steel and other materials and adapt to harsh working conditions.

Tungsten Carbide Characteristics

1. Extremely High Hardness and Wear Resistance

  • Hardness typically ranges from HRA 89–94 (equivalent to HV 1300–2000), far exceeding that of high-speed steel (HRA 82–86).
  • Wear resistance is 10–50 times that of high-speed steel, extending tool life by several to tens of times under the same working conditions.

2. Excellent High-Temperature Hardness Retention

  • It maintains high hardness even at 1000℃ (high-speed steel softens rapidly around 600℃).
  • This allows for extremely high cutting speeds, significantly improving machining efficiency, making it particularly suitable for modern high-speed, high-efficiency CNC machining centers.

3. High Balance of Strength and Toughness

  • Bending strength is generally 2000–4000 MPa, with better toughness than steel, less prone to brittle fracture, and able to withstand certain impacts and intermittent cutting.
  • By adjusting the cobalt content (6%–15%) and grain size (ultrafine, nanoscale), an optimal balance of "high hardness + high toughness" can be achieved.

4. Excellent dimensional stability and low coefficient of thermal expansion

  • The coefficient of thermal expansion is only 1/2–1/3 that of steel, resulting in minimal thermal deformation during machining.
  • Suitable for manufacturing high-precision tools, with dimensional accuracy easily reaching within ±0.001mm.

5. Excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance

  • Remains stable in acidic, humid, and high-temperature environments.
  • Particularly suitable for wear-resistant parts in chemical, marine engineering, and food processing industries.

6. Machining advantages

  • Extremely high surface quality and extremely sharp cutting edges can be achieved through grinding.
  • Good consistency in bar stock blanks facilitates subsequent coating, further enhancing performance after coating.

Application

1. Machining and Tool Manufacturing

Tungsten Carbide Flat Bars are suitable for manufacturing woodworking panel cutters, metal cutting knives, and plastic hot cutting knives. Their ultra-high hardness withstands frictional wear during high-speed cutting, reducing tool change frequency and making them suitable for continuous operation on automated production lines. This increases processing efficiency by 30%-50% while reducing tool replacement costs and indirectly minimizing downtime losses.

2. Die and Stamping
Tungsten Carbide Square Bars are used in cold stamping dies, powder metallurgy pressing dies, and wire and cable extrusion dies. With high compressive strength and precise dimensional accuracy, they can withstand the impact loads of high-strength material stamping. They are also anti-adhesive and have a long service life, making them particularly suitable for forming difficult-to-machine materials such as high-strength steel and titanium alloys.

3. Mining and Geological Exploration
They can also be used as inserts for mining drill bits and auxiliary cutting parts for PDC drill bits. Its exceptional wear resistance allows it to cut through hard rocks such as granite and basalt. In contrast, its impact resistance resists drilling vibrations, effectively improving drilling efficiency, shortening mining cycles, reducing drill bit wear, and enhancing operational safety under extreme conditions.

4. Electronics and Precision Manufacturing

Compatible with miniature cutting tools, precision fixtures, and electronic component molding dies. Leveraging its ultra-high dimensional stability and sharp cutting edge, it meets the production requirements of precision products such as semiconductors and micro-motors.

Process

① Precisely proportion tungsten carbide (WC) powder and cobalt (Co) powder, with a purity of 99.9% or higher and a particle size controlled between 1-5μm.

② Achieve uniform mixing and refinement of powder particles through impact and grinding with cemented carbide balls.

③ Select molding (small to medium sizes, mass production) or cold isostatic pressing (large sizes, complex shapes) according to product size and precision requirements.

④ Place the degreased billet into a sintering furnace for vacuum sintering or low-pressure sintering to achieve densification.

⑤ Grind the billet, finish the surface or apply a coating, and then cut the long rod into finished products of specified lengths according to customer requirements.

⑥ Implement multi-dimensional quality control throughout the process, including ultrasonic testing and mechanical property testing after production, to ensure qualified products are shipped.
