Tungsten Electrode Description

Tungsten electrode is a kind of tungsten alloy rod, which is also made by powder metallurgy. It is mainly doped with 0.3% to 5% rare earth elements such as cerium, thorium, lanthanum, zirconium and yttrium in the tungsten matrix.Due to the different chemical properties of rare earth elements, the color of the electrode head is also various, such as red for thoriated tungsten electrodes, gray for cerium tungsten electrodes, green for pure tungsten electrodes, purple for composite tungsten electrodes, and blue for lanthanum tungsten electrode,and brown for zirconium tungsten electrode.Although the individual properties of different rare earth elements are different, tungsten electrodes all have the characteristics of good arc stability, high arc pressure, good arc starting performance, good durability, strong electrical conductivity, excellent corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance.

Tungsten Electrode Application

Tungsten electrodes are mainly used for TIG welding, but can also weld steel and aluminum, and are suitable for both AC and DC conditions. However, different electrode types have subtle differences in their performance and applications. Three typical widely used tungsten electrodes will be introduced below.Tungsten thorium electrodes are the most commonly used electrodes today, with longer service life and higher levels of contamination resistance than other electrodes, and are especially suitable for DC welding of stainless steel, nickel and titanium. Lanthanum tungsten electrode has strong welding ability and is often used in AC welding, which is a key component in the aerospace industry. Cerium tungsten electrodes have excellent low current arc starting performance and have been widely used in pipe manufacturing, sheet metal processing or welding of fine parts.
