Aerospace Titanium Fasteners
Overview
The commonly used grade of titanium alloy for aerospace is generally TC4. TC4 titanium alloy is a typical α+β two-phase alloy, which contains 6% of the stable α-phase element Al and 4% of the stable β-phase element V, taking into account the advantages of both α-phase and β-phase. It has the characteristics of low density, excellent heat and corrosion resistance, and high specific strength. Aerospace Titanium Fasteners can improve the stability and safety of aerospace vehicles in limited space. They are often used to manufacture blades, disks, casings, and other parts of engine fans and compressors working in the low-temperature section. They are also used to manufacture fuselage and space capsule components, rocket engine boxes, and helicopter rotor hubs.
Characteristics
Balance of high strength and low density
The tensile strength of titanium alloy can reach 800-1100MPa, which can withstand high vibration and high impact. The density of titanium is about 4.5g/cm³, and compared with steel fasteners, a single set of titanium fasteners can reduce weight by more than 40%.
Excellent corrosion resistance
A dense oxide film is easily formed on the surface of titanium alloy, which can resist corrosive media. Its corrosion resistance is far better than that of steel, which reduces the maintenance frequency and replacement cost of fasteners and prolongs their service life.
Good high and low temperature performance
Titanium alloy can still maintain good toughness, oxidation resistance and impact performance in ultra-high and ultra-low temperature environments, ensuring the safety of connection structures under extreme temperatures.
Low elastic modulus
The elastic modulus of titanium is about 110GPa, which is lower than that of steel. When subjected to the same load, titanium fasteners have greater elastic deformation, can better absorb vibration and impact energy, and reduce structural fatigue damage caused by stress concentration.

Application
1. Fuselage structure connection
The fuselage is the main frame of the aircraft and needs to withstand complex stresses such as aerodynamic loads, its own weight, and cabin pressure:
- Wing-to-fuselage connection: Titanium alloy bolts, rivets, and other fasteners can connect wing skins, wing beams, ribs, and other structures, and take into account both strength and weight reduction requirements.
- Fuselage skin-to-frame connection: The connection between the fuselage skin (especially aluminum alloy or composite skin) and the internal bulkhead and long stringer.
- Door-to-fuselage connection: Aerospace Titanium Fasteners can withstand repeated loads to ensure the sealing performance and safety of the passenger and cargo doors.
2. Aircraft engine system
The engine is the "heart" of the aircraft. The working environment is extreme (high temperature, high pressure, vibration, gas corrosion), and the performance requirements of fasteners are the most stringent:
- Compressor component connection: used for the connection of the blades, impellers, and shafts of the low-pressure compressor, which can withstand the centrifugal force generated by high-speed rotation and reduce the inertial load of the rotating parts.
- Combustion chamber and turbine component connection: The working temperature of the combustion chamber casing, turbine casing, and other components is relatively high (300-500℃), and high-temperature titanium alloy fasteners can maintain stable strength at this temperature while withstanding sulfide corrosion in the gas.
- Accessory transmission system: used for the transmission gearbox connection of engine accessories (such as fuel pumps and hydraulic pumps) to avoid loosening and failure that affects flight safety.
3. Landing gear system
The landing gear is a load-bearing structure for aircraft taxiing, takeoff, and landing, and needs to withstand impact loads and vertical loads:
- Connection between landing gear struts and fuselage: Fasteners are installed at the connection between the landing gear struts (usually high-strength steel or titanium alloy forgings) and the fuselage load-bearing structure, which can reduce the overall weight of the landing gear while ensuring the load-bearing capacity.
- Connection between wheel frame and shock absorber: Titanium alloy nuts and anti-loosening washers are used for the fixed connection between the wheel frame, brake device, and shock absorber, which can ensure the reliability of the connection in long-term use.
Process
① Select high-quality titanium alloy bars, and use sandpaper or sandblasting to remove the oxide scale on the surface to prevent impurities from affecting subsequent processing.
② Cold upsetting or hot upsetting to process the head of the fastener (bolt head, rivet head).
③ Precision processing of the rod and thread (such as turning, rolling, tapping) to ensure connection accuracy and fit.
④ Use heat treatment (solution treatment or annealing treatment) to regulate mechanical properties to avoid deformation of fasteners during subsequent use.
⑤ Surface treatment processes, such as anodizing and plating treatment, to ensure service life.
⑥ Strict quality inspection: dimensional accuracy, non-destructive testing, and environmental adaptability testing.
