Overview

Characteristics
Excellent high temperature resistance
The melting point of hafnium is as high as 2233℃. It can maintain stable physical form and mechanical properties in a high-temperature environment and is not easy to melt or deform.
Good chemical stability
Hafnium does not react easily with air, water, and many chemical reagents at room temperature and has strong corrosion resistance.
Excellent nuclear performance
Hafnium has a large absorption cross-section for neutrons and can be used as a control rod material for nuclear reactors. It controls the rate of nuclear reactions by absorbing neutrons, ensuring the safe and stable operation of the reactor.

Application
1. Aerospace
- Hafnium rods can be used as lining materials for engine nozzle extensions and combustion chamber throats, capable of withstanding the high temperatures and high pressures exceeding 3000°C generated by propellant combustion, such as in the space shuttle main engine.
- When reentering the atmosphere, the surface temperature of returning spacecraft (such as manned spacecraft and satellite recovery capsules) can reach thousands of degrees Celsius. Hafnium rods can be processed into reinforcements or heat dissipation elements for thermal protection structures to help resist aerodynamic heating and protect the equipment and personnel within the cabin.
2. Nuclear Industry
- Hafnium control rods are inserted and withdrawn from the reactor core to regulate neutron flux, precisely controlling the rate of nuclear fission reactions and ensuring stable reactor operation or emergency shutdown.
- Hafnium rods can also serve as support or guide components for nuclear fuel assemblies, maintaining structural stability in the high-temperature and high-pressure reactor coolant environment and preventing fuel rod failure due to deformation or corrosion.
3. High-End Materials
- Hafnium can be added as an alloying element to nickel- and cobalt-based superalloys, improving the alloy's high-temperature strength and creep resistance by refining grains and strengthening grain boundaries. These alloys are widely used in components such as aircraft engine turbine blades and combustion chambers.
- Hafnium exhibits stable electron emission properties at high temperatures and is resistant to reacting with residual gases in a vacuum environment. It can be used to manufacture electrodes for vacuum arc furnaces and cathode support rods for electron tubes, ensuring long-term reliable operation under high vacuum and high-temperature conditions.
- In scientific research equipment such as nuclear physics experiments and high-temperature material testing, hafnium rods can be used as neutron shielding materials (blocking excess neutron radiation) or as structural components in high-temperature reaction vessels, meeting the stringent radiation and high-temperature resistance requirements of these experiments.
Process
① Typically, hafnium sponge or hafnium alloy ingots are used as the initial raw material, which is purified through electron beam melting to remove impurities.
② Forging pressure processing causes plastic deformation of the blank, refines the grain size, improves the microstructure, and initially forms it into a rough bar.
③ Multiple rolling passes improve the bar's dimensional accuracy and surface quality. Annealing is required after cold rolling to eliminate internal stresses.
④ If hafnium alloy bars (such as hafnium-niobium and hafnium-titanium alloys) are being processed, solution treatment and aging treatment are required to improve the alloy's strength and stability.
⑤ Cutting and grinding processes improve surface finish and dimensional accuracy to meet the requirements of high-end applications such as the nuclear industry and aerospace.
⑥ Comprehensive quality inspections are performed, such as mechanical property testing, chemical composition analysis, and dimensional inspection.
