Overview

The metal welding process is a key step in the metal manufacturing process. It can improve the welding quality and repair the damaged parts of the welded workpiece. It is mainly divided into fusion welding, brazing, and pressure welding. Titanium Filler Rods have excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and high-temperature stability. They are widely used in aerospace, medical equipment, chemical engineering, electronics, and other fields. They can be used as structural materials, filler wires (such as in welding), and in the manufacture of precision components. Their diameters typically range from a few microns to tens of millimeters.

Characteristics

Low density

The tensile strength of titanium alloys (such as TC4) can reach 800-1100MPa, which is comparable to high-strength steel, and its specific strength (strength/density) is much higher than that of most metal materials. It can ensure the load-bearing capacity of the structure while being lightweight.

Strong temperature adaptability

Not only can titanium maintain good mechanical properties in high-temperature environments, but it can also maintain good toughness at extremely low temperatures, making it suitable for use in low-temperature engineering (such as superconducting equipment and structural parts of cryogenic storage tanks).

Excellent corrosion resistance

Titanium forms a dense oxide film (titanium dioxide) in the air. This oxide film can prevent further corrosion of the internal metal and remain stable even in harsh environments such as acid, alkali, seawater, and high-temperature steam.

Good biocompatibility

Titanium and titanium alloys have no toxic side effects on the human body and have excellent compatibility with human tissues (such as bones and muscles). They can reduce the body's rejection of foreign bodies and improve treatment effects.

Application

1. Titanium filler rods are used to fill gaps and replenish material during the joining or forming process, while ensuring that the performance of the joint or formed part matches that of the base material.

Aerospace: In titanium alloy aircraft fuselages and engine components (such as welding turbine blades to casings), filler wire is used to ensure weld stability under high temperatures and high pressures.

Chemical Equipment: In the welding of titanium reactors and pipelines, the filler wire must match the base material (such as TA2 pure titanium or TC4 titanium alloy) to prevent corrosion caused by compositional differences in the weld.

Medical Devices: In the welding of titanium alloy implants (such as artificial joints), the filler wire must be biocompatible, and the weld strength must meet the long-term stress requirements of the human body.

Coating Filler: In the thermal spray process, titanium straight wire is melted and sprayed onto the metal surface to form a wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant titanium coating.

2. In non-filler applications, titanium straight wire is used directly as a structural or functional component, primarily for its strength, corrosion resistance, or biocompatibility.

Aerospace: "Support wire" or "connector wire" within aircraft skins and engine compartments, lightweight and resistant to high-altitude cold temperatures and vibration;

Medical devices: "Titanium sutures" used for fracture fixation in orthopedic surgery replace traditional steel wire, reducing secondary bone damage;

Chemical industry: "Filter skeleton wire" in corrosive environments (such as acid and alkali solution filtration equipment) or "electrode connection wire" in seawater desalination plants, resisting chloride ion corrosion.

Precision instruments: "Conductive wire" or "elastic wire" within sensors, such as the support structure of the sensitive element in pressure sensors, ensuring both conductivity and stability.

Process

① Based on the composition requirements of the finished wire, select titanium ingots of the corresponding grade (pure titanium such as TA1 or TA2, or titanium alloys such as TC4 or TC11) to ensure that the impurity content meets the standard.

② The titanium ingots are processed into larger diameter titanium rods through forging or rolling processes and then subjected to surface heat treatment.

③ Multi-pass cold drawing involves forcibly drawing the titanium billet through a tapered hole in a die to the target diameter.

④ Vacuum annealing is performed after every 3-5 drawing passes to eliminate work hardening, restore the material's plasticity, and prevent subsequent drawing fractures.

⑤ The cold-drawn wire is precisely straightened using a straightening machine (such as a roller straightener or pressure straightener).

⑥ Surface treatment: Electrolytic polishing or precision grinding is used to ensure the surface is free of scratches, cracks, and other defects.

⑦ Rigorous performance testing, such as mechanical properties, dimensional accuracy, and non-destructive testing, is performed.
